In terms of pepper productsVietnam is presently Australia’s largest pepper exporter, accounting for 50-60% of the market share. Sharing about the pepper market in Australia, he said, “Australia is not a pepper producing countryEvery yearAustralia has to import pepper from other markets with a growth rate of about 2.5%/year“.

In 2020, Australia imported 2.63 thousand tons of Vietnamese pepper, increasing 30.47% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, in the first 7 months of 2021pepper exports from Vietnam to Australia have increased significantly and it is expected that this trend would continue by the end of the year.

The current state of Vietnamese coffee exports to the Australian market

Similar to pepper, Australia is not a coffee-producing market, but the country is a big coffee consumer. According to Mr. Hoa, the average annual coffee consumption per person in Australia is 2kg, this is the coffee consumption of the top 30 countries in the world.

Commenting on the situation of Vietnamese coffee imports in the Australian market, Mr. Hoa stated that, despite a reduction in coffee import volume in the first seven months of 2021, Australia’s coffee imports from Vietnam have increased in the last 2 months. The volume of Vietnamese coffee imported into Australia grew by 41% in September 2021 compared to August 2021. From now until the end of the year, it is forecast that the volume of Vietnamese coffee exported to the Australian market is expected to increase.

In general, Vietnamese agricultural products have gradually asserted their position in the Australian market in recent years, thanks to the great efforts by Vietnam’s foreign ministries and consulates. Besides, Vietnamese enterprises have contributed significantly to achieving the current growth. However, proper orientations are required in order to promote pepper and Vietnam to Australia in the near future.

Promoting Vietnamese pepper and coffee exports to the Australian market

Although Australia is a large marketit is also one of the hardest to penetrate. According to Mr. Hoa, Australian consumers do not accept cheap products, instead of using quality and delicious products.

Furthermore, customers in Australia, as well as other markets, are increasingly interested in experiencing new goods. Therefore, in addition to enhancing product quality, generating more new products or processed products will assist in improving both the brand and the value of the business.

At this conference, Mr. Nguyen Phu Hoa also stated that there are over 300,000 Vietnamese people living and working in Australia, therefore Vietnamese products are introduced into the restaurant systems of businesses in Australia, they will be well received and have a pervasive effect. Furthermore, Vietnamese pepper products are currently used for more than 10 Australian restaurants, which is a positive sign for promoting Vietnamese pepper products and other agricultural products in Australia.
